A miracle school where 700 children live

In a remote mountain area of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, there is a school called Padmai Ga-Tshal Choiling Buddhist School. The roads are rough. Winter wind cuts to the bone. Summer is hot and suffocating. But on this seemingly barren land, 700 children, aged 4 to 18, live.

The school was founded in 2014 by Khenpo Karchoe Rinpoche. Most of our children come from the remotest and poorest villages in the Himalayas, and most are Tibetan children. Parents cross mountains and valleys, tears in their eyes, to entrust their children to us—because they truly cannot feed them, let alone educate them. Some orphans are brought by kind villagers. Some children are brought by relatives. But after they are entrusted to us, their parents never appear again. The school provides free education, food, lodging, and medical care—things poor villages simply cannot give.

Our resources have long been stretched beyond capacity, but Rinpoche never refuses a desperate plea. He always says, “Every child who comes to our gate is a treasure. If we don’t take them in, where will they go?” By 2026, the small school buildings have squeezed in more than 700 lives. To raise living expenses for the children, Karchoe Rinpoche has spent years traveling, teaching, and fundraising, yet it is still hard to meet the daily needs of 700 children. But with love teachers, Rinpoche, and students—together with laughter, reading, and faith, they hold this home up.

• ire teachers – The school is in a remote mountain area with rough roads and tight funding, so we truly cannot afford enough teachers. At present, high school offers only one subject. We hope to add science, languages, and other subjects, so students have a chance to sit university entrance exams and become medical workers, engineers, and teachers—using their professions to give back to society. In Nepal, the monthly salary, teaching materials, and transport for an excellent high school teacher cost only HK3,500. In many wealthy cities, that is just the price of one fine-dining meal. The cost of one meal is enough to open the door to a changed destiny for hundreds of children.
• Scholarships and practical skills training – Job opportunities in Nepal are limited, and the economy relies mostly on tourism. Beyond academic subjects, we hope to offer courses that both develop children’s potential and interests and help them make a real living—including thangka art,
singing bowl sound healing, handicrafts, and yoga. Scholarships give promising, high-achieving children the chance to study further abroad or earn professional certificates, so they can support themselves in the future and return to school to pass on what they have learned.
